Greetings!
My name is Holly and I live in Nashville, Indiana, the heart of beautiful Brown County, the Art Colony of the midwest. I create pottery in my home studio in the woods where I live with my husband, father, in-laws, 2 dogs, 5+ cats (we take in dropped off strays), 7 chickens, and lots of other critters. I still have one of my kids living around the area, which I absolutely love. My oldest works at Baylor Universtity in Waco, TX, my middle child is an engineering technician living near us, and my youngest is a project manager in Madison, WI. I hope at some point one of them will be as passionate about pottery as I am!
As for me - I have always been interested in pottery and started making it again several years ago. I love everything about the process (even all the research and testing!). I find that it fulfills my need to be creative like no other activity. I currently make pottery full time and have my pots in a several stores in and outside of Indiana. I moved into my new 900 square foot studio on our property in 2021 and have been working out of it ever since, a major step up from the garage I worked out of for several years. We are so happy to be in this space!!
I can be found throwing, trimming, painting, carving, stamping, teaching, testing, and glazing in my studio every day of the week. Making a pot is actually a fairly lengthy process when you factor in creating, drying, any applicable design testing or research, kiln firing schedule etc.. Custom orders are out 12-18 months currently and we are unable to accept all requests.
Every Holly Pot is handmade and no two are exactly alike. When you purchase a Holly Pot, you have a unique creation made by hand from a mound of clay to a finished product. Each is a one of a kind piece. At Holly Pots, we don't make "matching" pieces, we make coordinated pieces and our goal is to create unique, one of a kind, pots.
In 2020, we invested in a Bailey slab roller and are making many more products using this tool (and it is fun for our students too!). We have started making ornaments, magnets, coasters, hand-built tumblers/cups, vases, Christmas themed pieces, and much more! It is wonderful to have the slab roller as it expands our ability to create pieces and our students love it.
In 2023 we started slip casting - making our own plaster molds and using them with clay slip to recreate HollyPots pieces. We do this only with select pots and look forward to more slip casting in our future as it is a really fun addition to our work. All of our slip casting is in stoneware - we are not doing any low fire slip casting.
Along our journey in clay we also invested in a couple of 3D printers and use them for many of our custom orders. We are able to create logo stamps to use in clay and to create custom cutters for these. We use these mostly for bulk mug designs, but also for smaller orders on other pieces. Having the ability to create these ourselves saves money (ordering custom stamps is not cheap!) and we love passing those savings onto our customers. We also use these 3D printers to create stamps and impression rollers for ourselves, avoiding the need to use those that are commercially produced and allowing me to be creative in designing new pieces.
We also dabble in acrylic and water color painting, alcohol inks, resin arts, and jewelry making. My husband is passionate about woodworking and when time allows, makes amazing pieces! Check out our shop for the gorgeous table with an aqua resin river he made if you are ever in town!
I receive a many inquiries from people who would like to know more about pottery and are interested in learning to throw or want to make ornaments or other hand built pieces. My philosophy is simple - anyone can create pottery. As such, I accept only a handful of students January through August so that I can be a positive influence on the pottery journey of the individual student (we do not have students September through December). With such limited availability, we ask that you please contact us using our form at the bottom of our Home page if you wish to inquire about lessons and we can let you know the next available time. When I am not able to accommodate - I advise all those who inquire to also check with Hesitation Point Pottery for availability.
Our shop location is 59 East Main Street, Suite G (Old School Way) - we are a part of the wonderful area known as the Main Street Shoppes. Our neighbors, The Educated Otter, Homes on a Limb, and Foxfire are definitely worth a visit - wonderful, diverse stores! Brown County is a wonderful destination with so much to see and do - from visiting multiple local state forests, to touring local county artists at work, sipping at our local distilleries and wineries, and shopping and eating in our amazing Nashville, Indiana downtown, we really are blessed to live in such an amazing location.
I post pictures of my pottery and some videos of my process on Facebook (hollypots47448) and Instagram (HollyPots.Stoneware).
Thank you! ~ Holly
